Jennifer Hutchinson Contralto

An honours graduate from UBC’s Music program, Jennifer brings a high level of expertise and dedication to each rehearsal and performance. Jennifer completed the Diploma of Music Program at Capilano College before transferring to the University of British Columbia. While at UBC, she studied with sopranos Heather Thompson-Price and Marisa Gaetanne. After completing her Bachelor of Music, Jennifer continued her graduate studies with renowned pedagogue and Order of Canada recipient, Professor Bruce Pullan. She earned her Master’s in Voice Performance, with a Golden Key Honour.

As a soloist, she has toured eastern Europe for Schubert’s Mass in G minor, and has performed Mozart’s Requiem with the Vancouver Bach Choir,  North Shore Chorus,  Kwantlen College and Capilano University, with members from the Vancouver Symphony and the CBC Radio Orchestras. She has performed as alto soloist for Beethoven’s Mass in C  and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle with the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus, and Vivaldi’s Gloria and Beatus Vir with Laudate Singers and Orchestra.

Jennifer has also enjoyed working as a soloist with the Vancouver Bach Choir on many occasions, her highlight being a performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah as well as a performance of Messiah in Nanaimo, BC.  She has also been a featured soloist in a CBC West Coast Performance broadcast of Handel’s Dixit Dominus with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra.

In 2009, Jennifer founded A CAPELLA CHORUS as an opportunity for children and youth to help out their community and reach out to the world through song.  In addition to 2 formal concerts (one per term), the choir gave 6 outreach performances per year at local seniors’ residences and hospitals. For Jennifer and the singers, it was truly a rewarding experience to serve the community and share their love of music while spreading joy, having fun making concert CD’s and plenty of memories.  A CAPELLA CHORUS contributed over $10,000 by fundraising for various charities.

Jennifer makes it a key point to incorporate a variety of musical styles and techniques into the choirs she leads, and encourages multilingual texts and a multicultural exploration of music.

Jennifer has over a decade of choral conducting experience, having been Music Director of North Shore Chorus, Carousel Chorus, A Capella Chorus, and St. Andrew’s Choir. When not teaching, singing or conducting, Jennifer fills her time with voice-over, film-composition and song-writing with her husband Matthew, who is also a singer and sound engineer who teaches at Emily Carr University.
